When animal backgrounds start to earn their place
Somewhere around six months your baby starts reacting to things, and the photos stop being portraits of a sleeping bundle and start being pictures of a person with opinions. That is the point where a busy scene helps rather than distracts, because there is finally an expression to match it to. Before then, the quieter categories carry newborn photos better. The exception is Teddy, which works from day one, especially if the actual teddy in the frame is the one from the hospital bag.
Reusing the same scene without repeating yourself
Animal mats are the ones parents most often use twice, because a child who loves dinosaurs at eight months still loves them at eleven. The trick to keeping two mats on the same background distinct is to change the crop rather than the decoration: one close on the face, one wide with the whole body. Two identical-scale photos on the same scene look like a duplicate in the collage no matter how different the outfits are.
