Matching an emoji to the month
The obvious pairings are the good ones. Footprints for the month your baby crawls or takes a first step. Balloons for a birthday or a half birthday. A duck for the first proper bath or the first swim. A moon for the night they finally slept through, which is a milestone every parent remembers and no standard template has a slot for. Rainbow carries real weight for families marking a rainbow baby, and it is worth saving for that rather than spending it on a general month.
Keeping a tiled pattern from taking over
A repeating pattern is busier than a flat colour, so it needs a simpler photo. Plain outfits work best against these, and a photo where your baby fills a good part of the frame will hold its own where a small distant figure will not. If you are using emoji mats across several months, vary the emoji but keep the surrounding badge and sticker choices restrained, otherwise the mat starts competing with itself. One decorated element per mat is usually the ceiling.

- Nearly. At Lock Screen size the tiling reads as texture rather than as distinct emoji, which usually still looks good but is worth checking before you commit a month to one.
