Little

Blanket milestone backgrounds

5 designs

Five soft-texture backdrops that imitate the blanket most newborn photos already get taken on. They are the least staged-looking category in Little, which is exactly why they work for the early months, when the photo is usually your baby lying down and half asleep and you do not want the mat to make a production of it.

Every blankets background in Little

  • White Blanket

Soft folds in plain white. The cleanest newborn backdrop and the easiest to crop into any aspect ratio.

  • Knitted Blanket

Chunky cable texture in cream. Cosy for autumn and winter months, heavy for summer ones.

  • Floral Blanket

A printed floral throw. Enough pattern to carry a month on its own, so keep the outfit plain.

  • Rainbow Blanket

Bright striped weave. The most colourful blanket and a favourite for rainbow-baby announcements.

  • Muslin

Fine crinkled cotton, barely there. The quietest texture in Little and a good default for the first month.

Why blanket textures suit the newborn months

For the first eight to ten weeks almost every photo is taken from above with your baby on their back. That angle looks wrong against a scene with a horizon and completely natural against a blanket, because a blanket has no up or down. Muslin and White Blanket are the quietest and let a wrinkled babygrow and a squashed newborn face be the whole picture. Knitted Blanket adds visible texture, which reads as cosy in winter and slightly heavy in July.

Pairing a blanket mat with what your baby is wearing

Texture on texture is the trap. A knitted blanket backdrop under a chunky knitted outfit turns the photo into one continuous woolly mass with a face in it. Put plain cotton against Knitted Blanket and save Muslin or White Blanket for the days your baby is in something patterned. Floral Blanket and Rainbow Blanket carry more colour than the rest, so they want a plain white or cream outfit to stay readable, and they are better used for a single feature month than for the whole set.

Questions about blankets backgrounds

Which blanket background is the most neutral?
Muslin. It is the flattest and the least patterned, so it behaves almost like a plain colour with a bit of warmth.
Are the blanket backgrounds photos of real blankets?
No, they are rendered textures. That keeps them sharp at export and print resolution rather than limited to a source photo's size.
Can I use a blanket background with a photo taken standing up?
You can, and it still looks fine, because a blanket has no perspective to contradict. It just stops reading as a blanket and starts reading as texture.
