How to use printable milestone cards
Print the whole set at once, before the baby arrives if you can. Week one is not the week to find out the printer is out of ink. Keep the cards in an envelope by the spot where you take the photos, in order, so next month's card is always on top.
Use the same colour for the whole year. A matching set is what makes twelve photos look like a series when you put them side by side in a first year collage. The line at the bottom is optional, but filling it in on the day means the photo records what changed as well as how big they are. Stuck for words? The milestone caption generator has lines for every month.
Milestone card photo ideas
Lay the baby on a plain blanket beside a window and put the card next to them, then shoot from above. Swap the blanket for a seasonal one in December, or add a prop that echoes the colour of the card. For more set-ups, see monthly baby photo ideas you can do at home and the background library. To know which day each card is due, the baby milestone calendar lists every date from the birth date.
Milestone card questions
What size should baby milestone cards be?
5×7 inches is the usual size: big enough to read in a photo taken from above, small enough to sit beside a newborn. The cards here download at 1500×2100 pixels, which is 5×7 at 300 dpi, sharp enough for any printer or photo lab.
How do I print a milestone card at home?
Open the downloaded PNG and print it on 5×7 photo paper or card stock, set to actual size. On A4 or US Letter, print at 5×7 and trim with a ruler. Matt paper photographs better than glossy, because it does not reflect the window.
Are these milestone cards really free?
Yes. There is no email sign-up and no account. Make as many cards as you like, for every week and month, and print them for personal use.
Where should the card go in a milestone photo?
Beside the baby rather than on them, with a hand's width of space in between, so the number stays readable when the photo is cropped to a square. Shoot from directly above so the card is flat and not reflecting light.
Can I make milestone cards for weeks as well as months?
Yes. The maker covers a birth card, weeks 1 to 12, months 1 to 11 and a one-year card, so the newborn weeks get their own cards too.
